Love, Earth ® .
Love, Earth® jewelry is Wal-Mart’s Stores completely traceable fine jewelry line which for the first time gives customers the ability to trace the path of their Love, Earth® jewelry from mine to store by simply going online. Love, Earth® is the beginning of a journey towards a more responsible jewelry industry and is our first step in having all of the gold, silver and diamonds used in the jewelry sold at Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Club locations come from mines and manufacturers that meet Wal-Mart’s standards and criteria for responsible sourcing. These sourcing criteria address environmental and human rights as well as community issues and working conditions. Each mining partner involved with Love, Earth is required to post a report on how it is complying with our responsible criteria. Each manufacturing partner involved in Love, Earth is required to adhere to and are audited against Wal-Mart’s Ethical Sourcing Standards which cover such issues as compensation, underage labor and health and safety.
The Love, Earth® collection is a jewelry line showing that large scale retailers and their suppliers, from the mines through the supply chain to the retail customer, can work together to produce and deliver affordable, quality jewelry made from gold, silver and diamonds that are traceable and from mines that maintain leading environmental and social standards.
We believe Wal-Mart can catalyze positive change in the way jewelry is produced - from mining to refining, polishing and cutting, and through to manufacturing - by promoting responsible practices in all the business activities in our jewelry supply chain. To this end, Wal-Mart has developed a responsible sourcing strategy with a vision to provide Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club customers with affordable, quality products that have a net positive effect on the environment and human health and well being.
Love, Earth® Partners
Love, Earth® is the result of the collaborative effort of many organizations. Wal-Mart worked with partners in the mining and jewelry manufacturing industries that demonstrate environmental and social leadership, including Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Mine, Rio Tinto’s Argyle Mine, Newmont Mining Corporation, Aurafin, a Florida-based jewelry manufacturer and Intergold Ltd, a jewelry manufacturing arm of the Rosy Blue Group.
Conservation International, an environmental nonprofit organization, joined with Wal-Mart's jewelry team to lead the development of its sustainable sourcing strategy and provided technical expertise. Historic Futures, a UK-based firm, provided the online traceability service. In developing the environmental and social sourcing criteria for mines, Wal-Mart engaged and consulted with a wide spectrum of stakeholders.criteria include environmental, labor and social performance standards for mining. We have committed to a long term goal requiring all of our suppliers to meet these criteria. Wal-Mart developed these criteria with feedback and insight from mining companies, jewelry manufacturers, Wal-Mart’s sustainability experts, and NGOs. The criteria address not just compliance with laws and regulations, but extend to the management of environmental and social issues as they contribute to the sustainable development of the communities and regions touched by mining operations.
